CULTURAL VIBES' 18TH BIRTHDAY WEEKENDER 11TH -13TH JUNE 2010
Hi there everyone,
There are only 450 tickets and to be totally fair it has to be first come first served so if you are a friend of any of us connected to the event please do the right thing and just get the ticket as i/we cannot be responsible for anything once they are all gone. I am in New Zealand and will not even be home until May so there's really not an awful lot i can do.
The tickets are now available on this link;
www.etickets.to/buy/?e=4324
As the venue is very strict on numbers please don't expect any kind of guest list as all the performers and there drivers/partners etc are counted as part of the event which really limits us. We chose this venue because its perfect for this event, as there are very few venues in the S-West that would even entertain our special kind of fun. From Friday afternoon until Sunday night we aim to turn a farm dating back centuries/millennia into a wonderful birthday celebration as we are officially 18 years old this year. I, like you all cannot believe its been eighteen years but the old calender doesn't lie (even if my mirror does). Since announcing this weekend event the contact i have had from absolutely heaps of you these past few months seems to suggest that many of us have gone on to lead successful, productive lives which has made me very happy indeed.
Plymouth resident & Cultural Vibes fan Richard Escott was well out in front in 2006 with his Cultural Vibes Facebook page, which i only heard about after there was 500 members. This page led directly to the sell out Cultural Vibes Quay Club Night with John Kelly & a newly reformed Luv-Dup in June 2008 which was a great way for us to get back together and do what we do best "HAVE FUN" and in peace.
The night was a joy for all of us that were there but was over so quickly it was heartbreaking. People came from as far away as Canada, S-Africa, The Cayman Islands, and Europe and within 7 hours it was all over.
The Cultural Vibes Weekender will with its extended length give us all a great chance to catch up properly, have heaps more fun and renew old friendships, as one night in Plymouth really was not enough. Also it gives us the Promoters a chance to do what we do best and put on something fun. This time around and with the 3 days and 2 nights, as well as celebrating the past we can also celebrate the future as the underground dance scene is currently as fertile as its been in years.
Consequently Friday 11th June will showcase two of the best and most productive DJ/Producers in the World today and could safely be described as the sort of night we would love to put on now if we were still in The Warehouse (Along with 2000+ groovers it took to fill it). With a predominantly Disco/Nu DiscoTech flavour the night will be a great opener to the weekend with two of the Worlds most in demand Dj/Producers Prins Thomas & Greg Wilson coming to Cornwall & playing extended 3 hr sets just for us !
All day & night on Saturday 12th June will like the Quay Club Night in 2008 be dedicated to the late eighties & early nineties. All the DJ's and of course Rave legends "Shades of Rhythm" played at the The Warehouse during our run there & they are all over the moon to be coming back to play for you again. All of them rated the Club as one of the very best they ever played & you can honestly expect the best. We have all discussed at length what is needed and you can rest assured we will make it very special for you all.
The 3/4am finish for the 2 main rooms on both nights is not a curfew as such, but a chance to do what we always did best after Cultural Vibes finished, sit around with groups of friends and talk shit into the early hours. There are various fire pits, and relaxed areas at the venue for this kind of behavior and music will not be banned after 4am, just quieter for those that wish to sleep.
Sunday will not quite be a day of rest but a day of wonderful food and music. The Big Hog Roast day (Ticket price includes Hog Roast and alternative) will start at lunch time and continue until around midnight and the idea is not to rush off but to book off the Monday and wind down in style with some of the best Balearic Spinners around. The music will be very special indeed on Sunday and as the weather will be kind all weekend i am sure this day will turn out to be a highlight. The venue lends itself well to lounging around outdoors with its courtyards, pagan stone circle field, fire pits and ancient orchards to sit around and play in. With a sensible 11pm(ish) finish you will all then have the opportunity to get a good nights sleep before departing on Monday and hopefully a good chance to sober up properly.
I'm currently in the process of making sure that the food stalls onsite will source only the best local/organic fare, so rest assured this will not be a vegeburger/hot dog rip off event. I will do my best to make sure its as good as i can get as the venue lends its self well to this theme as its all Eco-Friendly and like my home here in NZ off the grid with its own self power.
As i also mentioned earlier we will also have a screen set up for those of you that cannot live without the The World Cup's opening games.
Anyway look out for additions to this line up as we get closer to the event and i will be posting mixes and biographies for all the new DJ's playing on the culturalvibes.co.uk site in the Guest Section (The Si Spex one is there already).
What i suggest you do is go and search out the story behind the new guys yourselves as there are mixes all over the web you can find.
Greg Wilson in particular is without out doubt one the most important groundbreaking DJ's Britain has ever produced and his recent renaissance world wide has been long overdue and quite possibly one of the best comeback stories ever. The quality of his Disco/Boogie re-edits has seen me spend a small fortune to get them on vinyl and i personally am over the moon to have him play for Cultural Vibes. He will be playing all his amazing exclusive edits for us and using effects via Revox Reel to Reel tape for 3 hrs. Its this balance of amazing tunes, effects and tricks that has seen him in demand the world over and in April alone he is completely circling the Globe on his never ending world tour. Check out his history on his website @ electrofunkroots.co.uk and you can hear loads of Greg Wilson mixes @ cosmicboogie.co.uk. And you can also find some great stuff on youtube including the first ever mixing on UK TV on cult 80's music show The Tube.
Norway's Disco Don Prins Thomas is playing all over the world in 2010 and must be one of the most in demand underground Dj's out there. As well as releasing 12's and remixes seemingly almost weekly he has an eagerly awaited solo album due out in March. His music production and Dj partnership with fellow Norwegian Hans Peter Lindstrom has seen them release two albums together as well as tour the globe constantly. Thomas also finds time to run two fine record labels of his own called Full Pupp & Internasjonal and both are constantly surfing the discotic zietgiest. I am buying nearly all their output and if you like my mixes then you know its all good. I highly recommend checking out any of the many Prins Thomas mixes available online or go treat yourself and buy the twin mix cd release by Prins Thomas called "Cosmo Galactic Prism" its absolutely bonkers ! I am absolutely thrilled to have Thomas play for Cultural Vibes, he was top of my list to be honest and i know he will offer our weekend a real treat with his take on dance music.
Paul Murphy has been releasing extremely good quality music for many years as part of Akwabba & more recently as Mudd. He has also released two wonderfully received albums as Smith & Mudd on his fantastic UK label Claremont 56 which has been releasing some of the best laid back music on the planet in the last few years. Paul's Dj'ing has taken him all over the UK and the World and he was recently invited out to California to guest at Dj Harvey's Sarcastic Disco. Claremont 56's vinyl output last year alone was absolutely incredible and i seem to have bought them all. I cannot recommend the Smith & Mudd lp's more for a wonderful aural treat, so go online and track down the Claremont 56 catalogue and treat your ears to some seriously beautiful life affirming music.
Balearic Mike has been with us before at The Warehouse as one quarter of the original Luv-Dup team. Since then he has continued to fly the Balearic flag world wide and has rightly become one of the most respected Dj/collectors out there. A recent CD in The Originals series on Paul Murphy's Claremont 56 label, gave Mike & fellow Mancunian Moonboots a staring role & a chance to share some rare gems with us all. Mike's "Cosmic Alphonsus" mix CD series can also be tracked down online at the cooler hosting sites and they really give you a sense of the shear breadth of Mikes encyclopedic musical knowledge gained as the Dance Music buyer for 18 years in quite possibly the best second hand record shop in the World. Most recently Mike has just started his own vinyl label called Fascinating Rhythm's, releasing a stunning interpretation of Radiohead's "The Reckoner" by Jonny Miller, one of my personal best records of 2009.
Si Spex is a top treat for beat heads everywhere, and as one half of UK Hip Hop act The Creators has released a multitude of tunes over the years including the ground breaking LP "The Weight" in 2000. I met him in 2005 while living in Cornwall and had the pleasure of playing tunes with him weekly on the Beautiful Gyllingvase beach in Falmouth. As well as recording and playing tunes he also moonlights as a private record dealer, specialising in the rare and wonderful world of library music. Si has supplied rare breaks and beats to some of the worlds premier hip hop artists and his ear for a great tune is legendary. Check his mix out on the culturalvibes.co.uk website for a truly wonderful journey into exotica.
Shades of Rhythm played a full live set at the Warehouse for Cultural Vibes back in 1994. It was one of the most memorable night's we ever put on as we tried to recreate a 91 rave for one of our regular classics nights. Along with LFO, Shades of Rhythm's seminal 1991 self titled album crystalised the Rave Scene perfectly for a generation of clubbers as tunes like Homicide, Sweet Sensation, The Exorcist, & Sound of Eden became instant classics and huge anthems on the dancefloor. These tunes will always be associated with the absolute peak of E & Rave culture before it morphed into the harder jungle style that hardcore went on to become. That night in 94 at The Warehouse was really quite special and as MC Ribbz introduced them 2500 people absolutely went off with the biggest roar i ever heard in The Warehouse Ever !!
This time around we are to treated to much more of the same as the original Shades of Rhythm treat us to a full 1.5 hour live and Dj set encompassing all the big tunes with their enigmatic MC Rayan on vocals. As Mc Ribbz could not be with us this time (big festy in Spain) Rayan will also be hosting the entire night on the mic as we return to the halcyon days of The Warehouse and the tunes we all heard there first.
Cultural Vibes guest & Original Hacienda Acid House legend Jon Dasilva has been touring the globe non-stop for the last 14 months as part of the Hacienda's never ending monster world tour and consequently has more experience slamming the big classics than anyone i know. One of Manchester's true pioneers, his groundbreaking work at the Hacienda went on to influence some of the worlds top name Dj's including a certain Sasha, who freely admits he learnt an awful lot from Jon early on.
" Well, Jon to me was the most influential DJ in my career really. He showed me the way. Not only did he give me my first breaks, my first proper, proper breaks, he taught me how to build DJ sets. I used to go and watch him play from 9pm and follow the whole night and listening to the way he crafted his dj sets and his use of accapellas and sound effects was just mind-blowing. He was so ahead of the game. I don't think there's another more influential person on my Djing career really" Sasha 2009
New Order's Peter Hook has recently published a book on the Hacienda which tells the full story of "How not to run a Club", booking Jon was not one of the mistakes though. The "HOT" night Jon played at the Hacienda would go on into Manchester folklore as one of the most influential nights ever. Jon has never stopped with his involvement in dance music and is currently producing & playing minimal techno and is as busy as ever.
Cultural Vibes favourite US House Head, Dj Digit will also be with us for the Weekend which should be a treat for us all. Jeremy has always rated Vibes as one of his best gigs ever and has remained one of my very best friends. His time in the UK during the early nineties left a big impression as he eventually moved here permanently from San Francisco and has been DJ'ing, Producing music & running record labels and distribution outlets ever since. A fantastic musical partnership with fellow Vibes favourite Pascals Bongo Massive saw the two record an album together & travel the globe once again. Sadly this promising venture was tragically cut short by Pascals untimely death on tour in Brazil just before a second Album release. A recent solo venture has now also seen Jeremy working for SKY in their transmission Dept as well as running his Sweet & Low European music distribution network.
Adrian Luv-Dup you all know and love so no real introduction needed you may think. However i think it should be mentioned that in recent months Adrian has stumbled (i am sure he really did stumble) into yet another creative zone, one of radio show host.
"The Eclectic Circus" started out only a short while ago as a Facebook page for Adrian and fellow Mancunian Paul Hughes to host some live mixes covering a very broad spectrum of eclectic music. The instant success of the page spawned a Thursday night show on Salford City Radio called "The Eclectic Circus Wireless Show" (10-11pm) which in turn has also now become a weekly shindig in one of Manchesters coolest bars. The radio show is on my weekly listening schedule as much for the wonderful music as it is for the northern double act the two have clearly formed. Some canny thinking has also seen them program some incredible interviews for the show as the ongoing two week special with Disco Producer supreme Tom Moulton has shown (2nd part this week 10pm). I highly recommend a listen to all of you as not only is the show full of great music its a bloody good laff too !!
Bristol legend Mike Shawe was one of the first Guest Dj's that made the trip to The Warehouse all those years ago. A regular visitor throughout 93/94 he also was resident Dj for the mighty "One Love" collective who's nights at Bristol venue "The Lakota" were massive. These days he is still at the top of his game but playing Soul & original Funk 7"s at the "Hot Buttered Soul" nights in Bristol and touring all over. Check out the website at
http://hotbutteredsoul.co.uk. Mike will be spinning some of his favourite classic House tunes for us on the Saturday night and then treating us to some "Hot Buttered Soul" on the Sunday too !
DiY Dj'S Jack & Simon DK really don't need an introduction i'm sure, but suffice to say that the DiY collective are currently travelling countrywide playing out and celebrating their 20th anniversary. Thats 20 years of "Doing it Themselves and influencing a multitude of Dj's, Promoters, and groovers alike (obviously including a young Dave Green). Their input into Cultural Vibes during the nineties was truly immeasurable and i still try to catch them live any opportunity i can. As i have mentioned many times Simon DK was instrumental in me even wanting to put on a night, let alone play records which i have done ever since i heard him first.
Mitch should be well known to all of you still in Plymouth as he has been behind the counter of Bigga Records for an eternity. His UFO nights have gone on for over a decade in the city promoting the very best in underground Electro & Techno at a host of venues. Just about every major player on the Electro scene has played for Mitch and as well as playing for us at the Candy Store in 2000 he has played with me all over the place including here in New Zealand. He has also played all over the UK & Europe, headlined the Big Chill with Tom Middleton and has recently re-located to Wadebridge in Cornwall with wife to be Penny where they have opened up a new Bar called Purple.
Phil Banks is another Plymouth stalwart who has entertained the S-West for over a decade. "Making a noise but doing it Quietly" is his catchphrase and his current "Music is my Poison" promotion outlet has seen him bring a host of top DJ/Producing talent to the S-West. From old Vibes fave Kelvin Andrews to Milo, Paul Murphy & Ray Mang. If you like your tunes with a touch of class there's only one place to go in Plymouth these days and thats to MIMP. His constant Dj'ing has also taken him all over Europe and the UK to play and like the rest of us he is in this game for life, and it shows.
Dj Spider has been spinning in Exeter for an eternity and is known as one of the best Bar Dj's in the S West. He hosts the weekly Wax The Van Radio show on Exeter based Phonic Fm and has been playing the cooler side of Disco for 15 years. I cannot think of anyone who has been plugging Disco for longer in the West Country and he must be instrumental in its current return to form. For the disco element to this weekend event Spider just had to involved, take a listen to Wax The Van on Mondays 8-10 pm and give your ears a real treat !
